I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married…

Just a few reasons why you should vote for Barack Obama in 2012.

The media-driven stereotype of the LGBT community is largely of an affluent white community. The well turned out men of Queer Eye putting you in fancy clothes, decor and food. Will rooming with Grace in a Manhattan apartment. A trendy liberal in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco. To the degree that society wants to think about homosexuals, they want gay to mean happy and fabulous. This isn’t the reality for many, especially LGBT youth from poor urban communities. It’s a sad fact that Black Protestant and Hispanic Catholic parents are often less accepting of homosexuality, leaving these kids in a bind. A few recent films have attempted to shine a light on this reality, though as one director noted, often reduced by distributors to “urban niche” (urban meaning Black and niche meaning LGBT) and not likely to have broad appeal.

Holy. shit.

I can’t even begin to describe how much I enjoyed myself last night.

Okay that’s a lie I can.

I really fucking enjoyed myself last night.

In the time span that I was there (four hours) I had two Absolute drinks (a total of $6), danced with three girls and got to meet up with a friend and made four new friends.

One of these friends included a gay boy from Australia whose name was also Jordan.

Oh yeah did I mention that I also found $7 on the ground. Proceeded to get a cab back to campus and my cab fare was $8. So I basically paid $1 for my cab.

Even though I’m leaving in a few hours I’m totally glad that some last hours I had were spent at Phase 1. If you are 21+ and a gay lady (or not) GO THERE. Seriously. So great.

Ps. Make sure you get there early. The line was a pain in the ass. Out there for 30 minutes in the cold but it felt like an hour.

Washington state has legalized same-sex marriage. Washington’s legislature passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage Wednesday by a 55-43 vote, making Washington the 7th state to do so.

Gov. Chris Gregoire says she will sign the legislation into law next week.

Washington joins Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont (and Washington D.C.) in granting marriage licences to same-sex couples.

State Rep. Jamie Pedersen (D-Seattle), who is gay, spoke on behalf of the approved bill:

“I would like for our four children to grow up understanding that their daddy and their poppa have made that kind of a lifelong commitment to each other. Marriage is the word that we use in our society to convey that idea.”

Congratulations!

Here’s the breakdown of what you need to know:

Today’s ruling:

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in a 2-1 vote that Prop 8 is not constitutional. This affirms Judge Vaughn Walker’s earlier ruling that Prop. 8 violated the U.S. Constitution by denying rights to a certain group of people.

“Although the Constitution permits communities to enact most laws they believe to be desirable, it requires that there be at least a legitimate reason for the passage of a law that treats different classes of people differently,” the justices wrote in the decision. “There is no such reason that Prop 8 could have been enacted.”

What’s next:

Expect an appeal from the opposition shortly. The case will either go to the full 9th Circuit (only 3 ruled Tuesday), or it will head directly to the Supreme Court on appeal. The Supreme Court would look at the case, at the earliest, next term, if they even decide to take the case.

Does this mean same-sex can now marry in California:

No. A stay is likely to be put on marriages. In addition, an appeal would prevent marriage from occurring.

Help ‘splainer, thanks ruthoutspoken.

Fearless a photography series by artist Jeff Sheng

In 2003, I began a photography project called “Fearless,” documenting high school and collegiate athletes who openly self-identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender and are “out” to their predominantly straight teammates and coaches.  Since then, I’ve photographed over 100 athletes across the United States and Canada for this series.

2012

i know a lot of people don’t think obama achieved much in his term, but i would much rather have someone who can speak publicly about this kind of stuff than not. really cool.

plus, the republican candidates are a bunch of bafoons. and i’m not just saying that. they literally are crazy.

It angers me that a lot of people in this community decided to vote for the Republican party during the midterm elections in order to “get back” at President Obama because he hadn’t passed gay marriage federally.

Here’s a fact sheet about what President Obama’s done.

Here’s the “It Gets Better” video page that includes multiple videos from his administration.

Here’s the LGBT page for the White House that includes a blog about LGBT issues, links to the Trevor Project and It Gets Better, information about what President Obama is doing to support AIDS/HIV research and prevention and even a video of Dr. Jill Biden speaking at a PFLAG event.

Don’t try to tell me that my President doesn’t care about our community. Representative Nancy Pelosi who was one of the highest women and LGBT allies in his administration lost her position during the midterm elections because people decided to punish President Obama. By doing that you’ve proceeded to put the exact people in charge who don’t want to give the LGBT community in charge. And what have they done? Blocked and prevented President Obama from doing other things in this country. As a matter of fact every single Republican candidate right now that’s running for President has said that they will repeal DADT as soon as they get into office.

I’m voting for President Obama again in November because I believe in creating progress and equality for our community.

Hopefully you’ll do the same.

I live the gay lifestyle, the gay lifestyle that is often mentioned by some Republican candidates for president. For those who are unfamiliar with the lifestyle, this is a typical day:

7:00 a.m. I wake up, and just as I have done every morning since puberty, I choose to be gay today. This will come as a great relief to my gay, homosexual, male lover who lies beside me. Because being gay is a choice, our relationship is a gamble day to day. Even though we have both chosen to remain gay and to be together every day for the past 16 years, we never take anything for granted. One of us just might throw in the towel one day and give up the lifestyle.

7:30 a.m. I take a gay shower and let the gay water rinse off my gay body.

8:00 a.m. I have a gay breakfast of cereal with milk, and a good, strong, gay cup of coffee. I am fortified for another day of ruining the fabric of American society.

9:00 a.m. I start my morning shift as a gay hospital volunteer. The hospital is not gay, just me. The patients are mostly normal people. But it is OK. The hospital has a rule that all volunteers must sanitize their hands before meeting with patients. This is to avoid spreading germs, but I think that hand sanitizer is also effective in stopping the transfer of my gayness to other people.

12:00 p.m. I return home, eat a gay lunch and take my gay dogs for a walk. Well, I am not sure if the dogs are actually gay. I have heard it said that homosexuality does not exist in the animal kingdom because it is not natural, so chances are that the dogs are not gay. But because they live with me and my gay, homosexual, male lover, they are perceived by others to be gay. I would feel bad about this, but the fact is that I need these dogs. They are the closest that I will ever come to having actual children, because, as everyone knows, gays should not (and cannot) have children. I push this out of my mind as I walk the dogs gaily through the neighborhood.

1:00 p.m. I teach classes at a small, prestigious, liberal arts college. I am a gay college professor. The college is not gay, just me. But some may view the college as way too liberal, because “sexual orientation” is listed within the college’s anti-discrimination policy. This basically means that the college turns a blind eye as I infect the impressionable students with my gayness on a daily basis. I do not teach anything particularly gay in my classes. I am a theater professor, which, for all intents and purposes, is gay to most people, anyway.

6:00 p.m. My gay, homosexual, male lover returns home from his job. Luckily, he has chosen to be gay today, too, so we can sit down and have a nice, relaxing gay dinner together. We are aware that our relationship is ripping at the seams of our heterosexual neighbors’ marriages, but we choose to ignore this. If we were normal people, the guilt might weigh on us heavily, but we are gay, after all, so we do not have consciences. We eat in peace.

8:00 p.m. We go gay bowling at our Suburban Gay Bowling League. There are quite a lot of us homosexuals who gather each week to bowl at our local bowling alley. This makes the normal suburban bowlers uncomfortable, but we do not care. Some of them are openly hostile to us. The more polite ones just stare at us. It makes us feel like we are caged, exotic animals in a zoo. But we count ourselves lucky because the alley owners have sold out. They allow us to bowl here because they are desirous of our ample, disposable gay income. Ah, the almighty dollar! The owners show mercy on the normal suburbanites, though, by putting a buffer zone of two vacant lanes between our gay league and them. We are respectful of this line, which we call the “edge of gayness,” and do not cross it. We try to tone down our gaiety and frivolity by focusing intently on our bowling. The normal suburbanites never venture past their side of the line, either, because it would be unimaginable to them to interact with us.

11:00 p.m. My gay, homosexual, male lover and I collapse from the weariness of the gay lifestyle we have been living today. All of this subversive loving, volunteering, working, eating, playing and socializing is exhausting. Some say the gay lifestyle is self-enslavement, but we just cannot think about that now. Before we fall asleep, we each take out our personal, leather-bound copies of The Gay AgendaThe Gay Agenda is our Bible. We do not look at the real Bible because we are gay and therefore have no religion or morality. We read and strategize how we can best destroy American society tomorrow. Sharing a good, hardy, gay laugh, we each fall into a sound, gay sleep.

spiritday:

Millions of Americans wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag.

Getting involved is easy — participants are asked to simply “go purple” on October 20 as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are.

How can I participate in #SpiritDay?

PLEDGE! First, sign the pledge to go purple!

RSVP on the Spirit Day Facebook event page and invite your friends!

GO PURPLE! Then, wear purple on October 20!
